Aston Martin Reveals Production Version of the V12 Zagato

With the final design approved and engineering development work progressing apace, Aston Martin has revealed the first images of its new V12 Zagato road car scheduled for production later this year.

Aston Martin designed the V12 Zagato to be the pinnacle of its Vantage range,” said Sonny Morgan, dealer principal at John Eagle European’s Aston of Austin. “The V8 Vantage and V12 Vantages have been very popular in Central Texas, which leads us to believe that there will be tremendous interest in this sexy, very limited-edition supercar.”

The V12 Zagato is also the latest expression of a successful creative collaboration that gave rise to a series of striking GT cars over the last half-century, the original and most iconic of which being the DB4GT Zagato. Not only does this masterpiece rank among the most desirable, collectable and valuable cars in history, its 50th anniversary inspired the V12 Zagato.

Though commemorating a great Aston Martin of the past the V12 Zagato could be no mere pastiche of the original. Instead the project was seen as the perfect opportunity to take Aston Martin’s ethos of technology and tradition to a new and exciting level. To this end, the V12 Zagato combines the modern ideas, materials, processes and technology pioneered on Aston’s fantastic One-77, while remaining true to the purity and craftsmanship of its illustrious forebear.

According to Aston Martin’s CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez, the V12 Zagato is, “a celebration of both Aston Martin’s heritage and its future. Our relationship with Zagato stretches back more than 50 years. Together in that time we have created a series of very special cars. The first – the DB4GT Zagato – is a true icon: fast, beautiful and incredibly desirable. In the V12 Zagato I believe we have captured the spirit of that car and combined it with a confident twist of modernity to give it a character all of its own.”

Initial design concepts for the V12 Zagato were explored in early 2010 Aston Martin’s Director of Design, Marek Reichman, and his Gaydon-based design team. Inspired by Zagato’s bold and individual styling signatures, they relished the challenge of shaping the V12 Zagato. The goal was to creatie a car that pushes the boundaries of Aston Martin’s design language, yet pays tribute to the DB4GT Zagato. Demonstrating Aston Martin’s ability to rapidly bring ideas to fruition the Zagato program quickly gained momentum, the design team worked hand-in-hand with engineers and artisans to complete the build of a pair of concept cars in the spring of 2011.

May 2011 saw the V12 Zagato make its world debut at the prestigious Villa d’Este Concours. Entered in the Concept Cars and Prototypes class, the V12 Zagato impressed the judges and crowd, taking first place against impressive opposition. In June, the Villa d’Este winner - along with the second prototype car – made the V12 Zagato’s world racing debut at the grueling 24 hour endurance race held at the Nürburgring. Both completed the ultimate durability test, continuing Aston Martin’s 100% finishing record in this notoriously tough race.

After an overwhelmingly positive response from customers, the decision was made in July 2011 to build a strictly limited run of V12 Zagatos. Since then, Aston Martin’s design team worked to refine the sports car’s detailing and aerodynamic performance while staying faithful to the original design concept. At the same time engineers based at Gaydon have been putting prototypes through the company’s rigorous development program to ensure the V12 Zagato performs as well as it looks.

Every Aston Martin is a unique combination of advanced materials, technology and time-honored craftsmanship. The V12 Zagato takes this philosophy to a level previously seen in the company’s exquisite One-77 supercar, which completes its build run this year. Built at Aston Martin’s global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, production of the V12 Zagato will be strictly limited to no more than 150 cars.

Creating each V12 Zagato is a painstaking process that takes approximately 2,000 man-hours to complete. Just like the One-77, the V12 Zagato is constructed from a combination of hand crafted aluminum and carbon fiber. The bonnet, signature ‘double-bubble’ roof and doors are hand-crafted aluminum, while the front and rear fenders, door sills and boot lid surround are made from carbon fiber.

The finished body is then painted in the same dedicated area as the One-77. Four unique colors have been created for the V12 Zagato: Scintilla Silver, Alloro Green, Alba Blue and Diavolo Red. The painting process alone takes some 100 hours to complete and is followed by the marriage of the body and the drivetrain within the sports car production area. From there the V12 Zagato is transferred to the standalone facility originally built to house One-77 production, where the build is completed.

This serene, laboratory-like space is perfectly suited to the task of creating special cars such as the V12 Zagato. It is here that time is lavished upon the fitment and installation of an array of bespoke components, including the side glass and the distinctive rear window, which features a curved surface that continues the sculptural lines of the ‘double-bubble’ roof. All the exterior brightwork around the windows has a contemporary black finish to complement the exposed carbon fiber components. Fitment of the hand-crafted interior and upholstery is also completed in this dedicated build area.

Like all Aston Martins, when viewed as a whole the V12 Zagato is an artful composition of powerful lines and compelling proportions, but when viewed up close it reveals sophisticated, sculptural surfaces and jewel-like details. The exposed elements of carbon fiber on the front splitter, A-pillars, rear lamp pods, diffuser, door mirror cases and rear wing all display the same perfectly symmetrical weave and smooth resin finish. Likewise the bold new grille is formed in a unique three-dimensional composite material mesh that echoes Zagato’s famous ‘Z’ moniker.

More delights are found inside. Seven Bridge of Weir hides – in semi-aniline finish to offer durability while preserving the natural texture of the leather - are used to trim the V12 Zagato’s interior. Hand-stitched quilting of a unique design creates a flowing pattern that evokes a dynamic sense of movement across the seats and headlining, while ‘Z’ embroidery in the headrests and rear parcel shelf add a further flourish. Satin-finish carbon fiber on the dashboard and center stack is perfectly complemented by piano black accents and satin black rotary switchgear. Carbon fiber sill plaques with ’V12 Zagato’ inlaid metal script provide a distinctive finishing touch.

A work of art built by skilled craftsmen to be driven and enjoyed by the world’s most discerning car collectors, the V12 Zagato is a fitting tribute to its illustrious ancestor. On sale now through Aston Martin of Austin, the production specification V12 Zagato will be exhibited at the Geneva Salon International in March 2012.

Aston Martin Racing Begins Testing the V12 Vantage GT3

Aston Martin has a long, rich history of competition. From the DBR1 that captured LeMans co-driven by Texan Carroll Shelby to the DBR9 that won its class there again almost 50 years later, Astons have been a star on the racing scene.

“Recently, Aston Martin retired its DB9 based endurance racers that were so successful worldwide,” explained Sonny Morgan, dealer principal at John Eagle European’s Aston Martin of Austin. “Once again, they’ve taken on a new challenge. Aston is turning the marvelous V12 Vantage into another race-winning sports car.”

Aston Martin Racing began testing its new V12 Vantage GT3 at Brands Hatch in Kent this week, covering almost 1000 kilometers in just two days. The majority of the mileage was conducted by factory driver Darren Turner.

After two days behind the wheel, Turner said, “The car ran like clockwork throughout and we’ve managed really good mileage already. The feeling of the V12 Vantage GT3 is a massive step forward from the DBRS9. Being based on the smaller Vantage it is more responsive and feels more nimble, giving the driver plenty of confidence to extract all the performance from the V12 engine while also being light on its tires. It isn’t too physical to drive and I didn’t even break into a sweat during the test!

“With the clean styling and the amazing sounding V12, its closer to the core values of Aston Martin’s road cars than any of the racing cars we’ve ever built. I’m certain it’ll become a favorite among motorsport fans in no time at all.”

The design and engineering of the new V12 GT3 endurance racer was led by Aston Martin Racing’s Chief Engineer for GT, Dan Sayers. The team is now embarking upon a rigorous development and sign off program, which involves extended testing of the car at competition speeds to ensure the longevity of all critical components.

“The V12 Vantage GT3 is a direct replacement for the Aston Martin DBRS9, which first competed in 2006 and went on to score many race and championship wins including the 2007 British GT Championship and the 2009 FIA GT3 Teams’ Championship,” added Morgan. “Sharing Aston Martin’s renowned bonded aluminum VH body structure and 6.0-litre V12 engine with the road-going V12 Vantage, the new racer is the culmination of six years’ experience competing at the forefront of all major international GT series.”

Aston Martin returned to GT racing as a factory team in 2005 with the DBR9 GT1, which went on to record back-to-back victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2007 and 2008, as well as winning this year’s FIA GT1 World Championship.

John Gaw, Aston Martin Racing Managing Director, said: “The testing of the new V12 Vantage GT3 has gone really well. We haven’t had any significant issues with the car, despite having covered close to 1000 kilometers, exceeding all our expectations in the car’s first track test. “The Vantage GT3 is the ultimate expression of all the experience that Aston Martin Racing has gained in the past six years. The DBRS9 still has a year of FIA homologation remaining, which effectively makes 2012 a development year for the V12 Vantage GT3.”

It uses a significantly revised version of the DBRS9’s 6.0-litre V12 engine. Changes include a lightweight crankshaft, dry sump lubrication and new valve trains for even greater performance and reliability.

“We’re very confident that the Vantage GT3 will be a competitive force in all GT3 series, winning races and eventually titles as well. Given our track record in engineering and building fast and reliable GT cars, we’re very confident that the new Vantage GT3 will build on the DBRS9’s success over years to come,” added Gaw.

The V12 Vantage GT3 will be eligible to run in all FIA GT3 and national GT3 championships; the Blancpain Endurance Series; VLN and the Nürburgring 24 Hour endurance race.

The 600bhp engine – positioned behind the front axle line for optimum weight distribution – powers the rear wheels via a carbon fiber propshaft, an Xtrac six-speed sequential transmission and limited slip differential.

Braking is by six pot calipers at the front and four pot items at the rear, with ventilated discs all round and manually adjustable brake bias. The suspension is double wishbone type with uniball bearings and two-way adjustable dampers front and rear.

Aston Martin Racing will continue with the V12 Vantage GT3’s comprehensive testing program into the New Year and beyond.

ASTON MARTIN SECURES SECOND CONSECUTIVE PODIUM IN AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES

At the final round of the American Le Mans Series, Aston Martin Racing scored its second consecutive podium when it finished a superb third overall and the best-placed gasoline powered car at Petit Le Mans. The 007 Aston Martin finished just one lap behind the 2nd placed diesel car.

Despite a strong entry that included five competitive diesel racers, the gas-powered V12 DBR1-2 ran flawlessly throughout the 1,000 mile epic. The car dominated the unofficial “gasoline” category with a clear four-lap margin to the nearest challenger.

“The Aston team uses a modified version of the same V12 found in Aston Martin street cars to power their race car,” said Sonny Morgan, dealer principal at John Eagle European’s Aston Martin of Austin. “The Aston was clearly the fastest of its type. With the way that the ALMS rules give diesel powered teams a huge advantage, this was a tremendous victory for Aston Martin.”

Mexican ace Adrian Fernandez powered the Aston Martin Racing machine over the finish line more than nine hours after the race got underway to score the team’s second consecutive podium result in the series, adding to its brilliant outright victory at Laguna Seca two weeks before.

Alongside teammates Stefan Mücke and Harold Primat, Fernandez performed as reliably as his LMP1 steed and kept firmly out of trouble despite the heavy race traffic for almost 400 laps of the 2.54 mile Road Atlanta circuit. In a race dominated by 10 safety car periods, the team’s engineers devised and executed the perfect strategy and responded decisively to the many safety car interruptions to exploit the production V12 machine’s impressive pace and dependability.

As the blazing sun dropped behind the trees and darkness engulfed the Road Atlanta circuit, engine oil from the extensive grid of prototype and GT racers and debris from the trackside clung to the DBR1-2’s windscreen, which limited visibility during Mücke’s final stint. The Aston mechanics cleared the troublesome grime to enable Mücke to continue before handing the reigns to Fernandez to cross the finish line.

Aston Martin Racing Principal, George Howard-Chappell said: “I am very, very pleased with our result; the car ran impeccably along with a fantastic team performance.

“The drivers drove exceptionally well and we are delighted to be fastest petrol car. It is sad to see our sister car, Muscle Milk Racing, suffer an engine problem but obviously nice to see the Gulf AMR Middle East Vantage GTE car run faultlessly.”

At the podium celebrations, Fernandez said: “It was a great team effort. The drivers worked really well together; we were quick when we needed to be quick and we were conservative and smart when we needed to be. Conditions were tough, especially at night, and visibility was poor when the light was fading, but we stayed on track and that’s what racing is all about.

“Winning overall at Laguna Seca and now third here against the top diesel cars makes me so proud of the whole team. I’m very happy. It’s fantastic for us and I want to thank the team and my sponsor Lowe’s.”

Primat added, “I feel great, it is amazing to be on the podium after starting with five diesel cars in front of us. We never thought it was possible at the start of the race. Just fantastic.”

The near-ten hour race was characterized by mechanical woes and driving errors as many of the entrants failed to last the distance. Aston Martin Racing further proved its sporting credentials in the GTE AM category as the V8-powered Gulf AMR Middle East Vantage GT2 finished a strong fourth in class.

The 007 Aston Martin Racing machine will next engage in battle at the final round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup at Zhuhai in China on 12 November 2011.

Only a few months after its official launch, the Aston Martin Virage captured a major award. In the annual readers’ vote of the German motoring magazine Auto Bild Klassik, the Virage triumphed in the ‘Classic Golden Steering Wheel 2011’ award.

“This fantastic V12-powered British luxury sports GT was crowned the ’Classic Car of the Future’ by the prestigious magazine,” said Sonny Morgan, dealer principal at John Eagle European’s Aston Martin of Austin. “This is the second consecutive year that an Aston Martin car has received the top prize. Last year, the top choice was the wonderful four-door Rapide.”

The Aston Martin Virage won in the category “Sports Cars & Coupés” well ahead of nine other competitors from Germany and abroad. More than 27,000 readers of the Auto Bild Klassik magazine cast their vote.

“Aston Martin has been recently voted as the coolest brand in the UK again. The fact that as a manufacturer with quintessentially British roots we are also recognized in other markets shows that we have become a globally successful brand,” said Dr. Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin CEO, at the awards ceremony in Stuttgart on Thursday. “Germany is the most competitive sports car market in Europe. We are therefore very encouraged as a British brand to be voted by readers of a German magazine as the victor.”

The Aston Martin Virage premiered at the Geneva Motor Show in March and is now available through Aston Martin of Austin as both a Coupé and Volante (convertible). The Aston Martin Virage is positioned between the DBS and the DB9, completing the sporty GT-series of the British sports car maker.

Aston Martin to Debut One-77 & V12 Zagato in Automotive Heaven

It’s that time of year again, when car aficionados make their way to automotive heaven for the renowned Monterey Car Week including the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California. This week-long celebration has a series of exclusive, festive events that will drive any enthusiast into full gear. Celebrations kicked off last night during the McCall’s Motorworks Revival where the V12 Zagato made its American debut. This private venue, situated high above Carmel with panoramic views across the Monterey Bay, will provide the perfect backdrop for showcasing this ultimate Aston Martin. Aston Martin V12 Zagato Completes First Running at the Nürburgring

Aston Martin’s new V12 Zagato endurance race car concept has completed its first running under race conditions in the 53rd ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup VLN race at the Nürburgring, just one week on from its first public appearance at the Villa D’Este Concours.

The typically eventful four-hour race with over 150 other competitors formed part of vital preparations ahead of a two-car V12 Zagato entry at the Nürburgring 24-hour race in late June. The new V12 Zagato was joined by four other Aston Martins in the field, including the factory supported V8 Vantage (nicknamed ‘Smurf’) and V12 Vantage (called “Kermit”).

The V12 Zagato completed useful development laps during the four-hour race and while experiencing some inevitable teething issues, accrued valuable data which can be used to hone the car ahead of the 24-hour race next month.

Aston Martin’s Head of Motorsport, David King said, “For V12 Zagato today was all about working on our race setup and developing the car ahead of the 24-hour race. Clearly, the car is still in the very early stages of development having only been unveiled a week ago and it was important for us to take as much learning and data as possible from today and give our drivers chance to familiarize themselves with the car.

“In terms of our other runners, the V12 Vantage was very unfortunate to be caught up in an incident on the first lap but managed to limp to the pits where the team heroically made the necessary repairs to get it running and back in the race. Today’s major highlight though proved our V8 Vantage with Darren (Turner) and Jurgen (Stumpf) who drove superbly to a second in class finish.”

Making its world debut at the Villa D’Este Concours last weekend, the Aston Martin V12 Zagato won the Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award for Concept Cars and Prototypes on the shores of Lake Como, Italy.

Introduced as a modern interpretation of the famous Aston Martin and Zagato collaboration in the 50th anniversary year of the iconic DB4GT Zagato, the V12 Zagato was shown for the first time at the prestigious international event, sparking great interest amongst visitors and customers.

Reviving a collaboration which has produced some of the most beautiful and sought-after cars in the world, the partnership takes inspiration from the past, to create a modern descendent of classics such as the DB4GT Zagato, V8 Vantage Zagato and DB7 Zagato based on Aston Martin’s ultimate performance interpretation of the Vantage range: the V12 Vantage.

Aston Martin Forms New Collaboration with Custom Coachbuilder Zagato

John Eagle European’s Aston Martin of Austin has announced that Aston Martin formed an exciting new collaboration with renowned Italian design house Zagato. This year marks the 50th anniversary year of the iconic DB4GT Zagato and the first vehicle from this renewed relationship was shown for the first time at the famous Villa D’Este Concours on May 21 2011. Then, a racing version of the new sports car debuted last weekend at Nürburgring; this was an amazing feat as it was just one week later.

“Many consider the DB4GT Zagato to be the pinnacle of Aston Martin sports cars built in the 1960’s,” said Sonny Morgan, Aston Martin of Austin managing partner. “Zagato and Aston collaborated on two other cars subsequent to the DB4 program, which both were acclaimed for their design.

“We’ve been asked many times about rumors of a new Aston Martin Zagato since the news first broke. Is it based on the V8 or V12 Vantage? How many will be built? Will it be available in the United States? We look forward to sharing all the details about this wonderful sports car once it officially debuts this weekend in Italy.”

Aston Martin and Zagato have enjoyed a long relationship since their first collaboration which culminated in the production of the now iconic DB4GT Zagato 50 years ago. The 1960 DB4GT Zagato was created to compete with the mighty Ferraris of the period. Aston turned gave their sporting coupe more voluptuous styling, a better power to weight ratio, a bit more power superb brakes and sharper handling. Only a few of these rare, exclusive cars were built. Today, those cars command multi-million dollar price tags and are considered among the most coveted Astons in the world.

Work on the new Aston Martin Zagato collaboration is well under way with an initial concept to be presented at the Villa D’Este Concours to gauge initial customer reaction with a view to a production car following in 2012. Held on the shores of Lake Como Italy, this event has become one of the crown jewels of the collector car world.

According to Aston Martin Design Director, Marek Reichman, “Our designers are able to collaborate with a broad spectrum of organizations and individuals to seek new and exciting ideas and inspiration due to Aston Martin’s independency.

“Working with Zagato again in 2011 is inspirational for the team – certainly DB4GT Zagato is one of my favorite ever designs as it is with many of the designers in our studio. We can create a truly modern Aston Martin interpretation which stays true to the historical routes of the relationship with Zagato."

The first partnership between Aston Martin and Zagato began as a quest to create an ever lighter and higher performance version of the DB4GT. Aston Martin approached Zagato, a company renowned for such projects. Managing Director, Elio Zagato and Technical Director Gianni Zagato along with a talented team managed to draft the main designs of the DB4GT Zagato in just one week.

After previewing the car late in 1960 at the London Motor Show to great acclaim, Aston Martin began taking orders and production began in 1961. Of the original 19 DB4GT Zagato built, all still survive and are part of some of the world’s greatest car collections. The first car built and used to unveil to the public was later extensively raced beginning with its debut at Goodwood in 1961.

Of all of the DB4GT Zagatos, three were built to a lightweight racing specification designated within Aston Martin as DP209 (Design Project Number). Among these were perhaps the two most famous DB4 GT Zagatos, ordered by the Essex Racing Stable and registered as ‘1 VEV’ and ‘2 VEV’. These cars were raced successfully by greats such as Jim Clark and Roy Salvadori. As a tribute to this racing heritage, the new Aston Zagato will be campaigned in endurance racing beginning with the Nürburgring on May 28.

25 years after this first collaboration between Aston Martin and Zagato the two companies joined forces again in 1986 to design and build a limited number of the V8 Vantage Zagato and then later the V8 Zagato Volante. The former of the two cars, based upon the highly acclaimed V8 Vantage, was heralded as one of the most dynamic Aston Martins offering performance figures of 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 186mph.

A more recent project took place with the design and production of the DB7 Zagato. Launched at the Paris Motor Show in 2002 with production following in 2003, a total of 99 examples were built for sale with number 100 kept by Aston Martin. After the announcement of the DB7 Zagato, a great deal of interest was shown by American customers for a version suited to the climates of Florida and California. Thus, the collaboration extended to an identical number of DB-AR1 (American Roadster 1) being built. Similar in styling to the DB7 Zagato but built as a pure two-seat roadster with no roof, the DB AR1 fulfilled this demand perfectly.

Aston Martin Racing Announces New Vantage GT3

Aston Martin Racing has announced the new Vantage GT3 race car, which is based on the V12 Vantage road car for competition in 2012. The new Vantage GT3 joins the Vantage GT2, GT4, DBR9 GT1 and the AMR-One LMP1 to create the largest and most comprehensive range of Aston Martin race cars to date. The Vantage GT3 replaces the DBRS9, launched in 2006 at Le Mans.

“So far, 26 total DBRS9 chassis have been built and raced to multiple victories in national and international series across the world,” said Sonny Morgan, dealer principal at John Eagle European’s Aston Martin of Austin. “Most recently, a DBRS9 won the Australian GT at Mount Panorama in October last year and achieved a podium finish at Zolder last week.”

Designed to meet FIA regs, the Vantage GT3 will be built on the Vantage aluminum VH architecture with a lightweight dry-sump 6.0 liter V12 engine, based on the V12 Vantage road car. The new car will have a race semi-automatic paddle shift Xtrac gearbox and the latest race-developed ABS and traction control systems, optimized for the Vantage GT3.

Aston Martin Racing Managing Director John Gaw added, “The DBRS9 has been a very successful GT3 racing car and despite being more than six years old, is still competitive today.

“However, the competition has moved on and we needed to create a new car that combines our six years’ experience in this category with the latest race technology to continue Aston Martin’s success in GT3 for many years to come.”

Aston Martin Racing has set a target weight of about 2,755 pounds (1,250kg) and engine performance figures of more than 600bhp. The first car will be completed in July 2011 and will undertake an extensive test and development program during the rest of the year. Ten customer cars will then be built ready for delivery for the start of the 2012 season.

Aston Martin Racing Launches New Race Car

While the new Formula One venue has been garnering so much attention in Austin, the potential for other forms of racing at the track has often been overlooked. Many sports car fans hope that an event will eventually be run on the Lone Star State’s newest proposed track.

If that occurs, maybe they will get to watch the new LMP1 car compete in Texas. At the recent Geneva Auto Show, Aston Martin Racing announced its plans for the new season including the unveiling of a new ground-up developed LMP1 race car, the AMR-One. The British carmaker also confirmed the driver line-up and planned race program.

“The Gulf Oil International sponsored and liveried Aston Martin AMR-One is a new open-top LMP1 race car featuring a 2.0 liter turbocharged six cylinder direct injection petrol engine,” said Sonny Morgan, managing partner of John Eagle European’s Aston Martin of Austin. “The engine was developed for a new carbon fiber chassis designed and manufactured by Aston Martin Racing.”

Based on the new regulations for 2011 instigated by the Le Mans governing body; the ACO, Aston Martin Racing has chosen to change tack this year in designing an open cockpit car. In line with the new 2011 rules, the AMR-One features the new blade-fin and has a significantly down-sized engine in keeping with the championship’s efficiency focused regulations. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a six-speed transverse semi automatic pneumatic shift, Xtrac racing gearbox.

A total of six AMR-Ones will be built, with the factory team running one car in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) which includes the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans and two cars at selected events. The AMR-One is linked to Aston Martin’s ultimate design and engineering showcase; the road going One-77; both of which share similar philosophies featuring carbon fiber monocoques. Aston Martin’s in-house design team worked closely with the engineers at Aston Martin Racing to find the optimum balance between aesthetics and aerodynamics.

Aston Martin Chief Executive, Dr. Ulrich Bez said, “Aston Martin’s heritage is deeply rooted in endurance sports car racing, so in 2011, we take the next step demonstrating that a small team using advanced design and engineering intelligence will be agile and competitive.”

The driver line up for 2011 will consist of Darren Turner (GB) Stefan Mücke (D) and another driver yet to be announced, who will join the team piloting the 007 car. Adrian Fernandez (MX), Andy Meyrick (GB) and Harold Primat (CH) will be teaming up to drive the 009 car.

Aston Martin Racing Chairman, David Richards said, “George and the team have been extremely busy over the winter months and they have been working day and night to produce what is not only a stunningly beautiful race car but one which will use the new ACO regulations to best effect.

“Just like the road cars, the AMR-One has been elegantly engineered where simplicity runs throughout to produce what we expect to be a competitive and reliable endurance racer.”

Team Principal George Howard-Chappell said, “We have chosen to run with a six cylinder turbocharged engine because we believe this offers the best potential within the petrol engine regulations. With the ACO’s commitment to effectively balance the performance of petrol and diesel Le Mans entrants – our hopes are high that we’ll see the closest racing yet in the premiere LMP1 category.”

It is expected that Aston Martin Racing will contend selected races in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup with rounds in the United States (Petit Le Mans), Belgium (Spa), France (Le Mans), Italy (Imola), England (Silverstone) and China (TBC) and make its debut at Paul Ricard on the 1-3 April 2011.

The AMR-One is expected to test for the first time in early March.

Aston Martin’s hand-built 6.0 liter V12 engine produces 490 HP and 420 lb. Ft of torque. It is mated to a six-speed Touchtronic II automatic transmission mounted on the transaxle, contributing to perfect 50:50 weight balance.

“The Virage’s dynamics were tuned to deliver an engaging yet more refined driving experience,” added Morgan. “In the Virage, a driver can extract the maximum performance from the car with greater ease.”

A newly developed Adaptive Damping System intelligently ‘reads’ the road to provide optimum road holding, adapting to different conditions. The system selects up to five different stiffness settings within normal mode, and a further five stiffer settings within sport mode. A ‘Sport’ button on the fascia allows the driver to select a sharper throttle response and faster gear changes while also holding the gears without automatically shifting up at the revolution limiter.

Virage comes standard with Carbon Ceramic Matrix brakes, which offers progressive and tremendous stopping power. Resistant to fade and much lighter than conventional cast-iron discs, this system means that not only is the overall vehicle weight reduced, there is also a better balance between ride comfort and handling. Lower rotational mass helps improves acceleration, too.

“The Virage capitalizes on technology created for the DBS and unites it with the comfort and refinement of the DB9 and Rapide,” explained Morgan. “From its One-77 inspired styling cues to its performance enhancements, the Virage is completely different from anything else in the line.”

Aston Martin’s own bonded aluminum ‘VH’ architecture that forms the backbone of the marque’s sports cars, takes inspiration from the aerospace industry where weight reduction is the ultimate goal. Strong yet light, the inherent properties of modular aluminum lend themselves perfectly to an extremely rigid and versatile platform, which allows the production of a Virage coupe and Volante.

The Virage sits low and wide asserting the power which lies beneath; single bi-xenon headlamps follow the lines of the car’s flanks to give a more crisp and modern look from the front. A new aluminum metal front grille, inspired by the One-77, features five horizontal vanes, which are chamfered creating an aerofoil profile.

The new front bumper is pure and relieves the car of any visual complexities, contributing to the overall simplicity of design. The front wings distinguish the Virage from its stable mates housing a new modern interpretation of the Aston Martin iconic side strake housing six LEDs elegantly forming the side repeater. Virage’s side sills carry the simplicity of the front bumper through to the rear diffuser which houses a body-colored blade accentuating the width of the car.

As drivers and passengers open the signature swan wing doors, they are greeted by the aroma of seven hides of the finest Bridge of Weir leather expertly hand stitched by craftsmen. Inspiration was taken from luxury leather goods to produce a pinstripe welt, which flows down either side of the fascia and along the seat and door, drawing your eye through the car.

“In all, over 200 man hours will be spent handcrafting the Virage at Aston Martin’s facility in Gaydon, England,” explained Morgan. “More than 70 man hours will be lavished on the interior alone.”

Simplicity runs throughout the car with the new fully integrated Satellite Navigation system that has been developed in conjunction with Garmin. The new system simplifies operation through the existing four-way joystick mounted on the fascia. A new 6.5 inch high resolution display uses the latest graphics and maps to visually and aurally guide the driver to their destination.

Standard equipment includes heated seats (Sports seats only), cruise control, satellite navigation, Bluetooth telephone preparation and the powerful 700W Aston Martin Premium Audio System with Dolby^® Pro Logic II^® and full iPod^® integration.

Aston Martin of Austin Announces the New Vantage S

Aston Martin has announced an addition to the V8 Vantage line up. The new “V8 Vantage S” features a host of new driver-focused features designed to push the dynamics of the standard car to a new benchmark level. The “S” package is available for both the coupe and roadster variant of the car.

Aston Martin has engineered its 4.7 liter V8 engine to deliver peak power of 430 HP at 7300 rpm and torque of 361 lb. ft. at 5000 rpm, which are 10 more horses and 11 more foot pounds of torque. The flexible engine is now coupled with a new ground-up developed Sportshift™ II transmission specifically designed for the car with seven short ratio gears to deliver an engaging and intense driving experience.

“The Vantage S epitomizes every attribute of the V8 Vantage and pushes the driver experience beyond what we have offered before,” says Dr. Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin, “It combines dynamic exhilaration with all the charming finesse, beauty and practicality already associated with the Vantage range.”

Dynamic revisions are central to the Vantage S, with a quickened steering rack ratio of 15:1 compared to 17:1 on the standard car and a larger diameter front brake disc with new six-piston front brake calipers. New springs and dampers, and wider rear wheels also contribute to chassis revisions. A new dynamic stability control (DSC) system specifically tuned to the Vantage S along with a new brake module providing features, such as Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA,) which provides assistance in emergency braking situations, and Hill Start Assist (HSA). Bespoke tires have been developed with Bridgestone to optimize road holding enhancing dynamic feel.

“While the extra power is fantastic, the new seven speed Sportshift automated manual transmission is the biggest news for this car,” stated Sonny Morgan, dealer principal at John Eagle European’s Aston Martin of Austin. “This transmission was created specifically for the Vantage S. It delivers extraordinarily fast gear changes and the extra gear really takes advantage of the additional torque. The Vantage S delivers quicker acceleration and an even sportier feel.”

The Sportshift II uses a single clutch system to reduce complexity and save significant weight over a dual clutch solution. Sportshift II allows the driver to take an increased level of control, modulating the throttle pedal to achieve the desired type of gear change. In addition, the Vantage S features a ‘Sport’ button, which quickens the gear changes and gives the driver a more aggressive throttle response while also opening the exhaust bypass valves across most of the engine speed range perfectly characterizing the ‘S’ variant.

As with every Aston Martin, the Vantage S benefits from its own unique sound. The sports car has a new exhaust muffler and bypass valve map, creating a very distinctive and highly vocal exhaust note.

The Vantage S is instantly recognizable as a true Aston Martin, characterized by its purposeful stance conveying its agility and performance capability. From the front, a new lower front bumper finished in perfectly-aligned carbon fiber houses a larger air intake feeding the engine and front brakes. The splitter combined with the extended deck lid ‘flip’ work in harmony to provide increased down force at speed. New 19 inch ‘V’ spoke wheel styles are available as standard, while an optional 10-spoke lightweight forged wheel option, reduces unsprung mass further. A new rear bumper and side sills optically widen the car.

“Bridging the gap between road car and race car, the Vantage S is heavily influenced by the 2011 Vantage GT4 race car,” added Morgan.

The GT4 takes advantage of the Vantage’s immensely rigid bonded aluminum chassis, providing the ideal platform for a race car. Minor racing safety modifications including an FIA approved roll cage and racing ‘bag’ petrol tank along with weight saving measures are made to the standard road car to convert it into a class winning race car. In 2010, it won its class at the Dubai 24 Hours following this up with further endurance race wins at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, Silverstone 24 Hours and Spa 24 Hours. It also won its first major international championship victory in the European GT4 Cup.

Aston Martin Launches New Vantage GT4 Racecar

Aston Martin Racing has launched a new Vantage GT4 for 2011. The new V8 engined racecar takes design inspiration from Aston Martin’s V12 Vantage road car, giving it enhanced aerodynamics and increased downforce. It also has a remapped 4.7 liter engine offering increased levels of power and torque.

As with the current 4.7 liter Vantage GT4, which made its race debut in 2009, the 2011 car is closely based on the V8 Vantage road car with key attributes being carried over including the aluminum chassis, base engine and suspension design. In addition to the engine and aero upgrades, competitors can, for the first time, choose a race-developed Bosch ABS and traction control system. This system has been specifically optimized by Bosch Motorsport for the Vantage GT4 to provide race-enhanced performance in both wet and dry conditions.

The Vantage GT4’s new splitter increases downforce at the front of the car, as well as channeling cooling air to the brakes and radiator. At the rear, the car gains the V12’s larger boot ‘flip’. This works together with a new carbon fiber diffuser and rear underfloor, which create an area of low pressure under the rear of the car, to increase downforce. The redesigned underfloor also channels more air through a new rear-mounted high capacity transmission oil cooler.

Aston Martin Racing has built and sold more than 80 Vantage GT4s to customers around the world in the last two years and it has become the most successful car in its class. A few months ago, Aston Martin began delivering a new motorsport-inspired special edition named the V8 Vantage N420. Available through John Eagle European's Aston Martin of Austin, this limited produciton car brings a new dimension of sporting prowess and dynamic ability to the V8 Vantage range.

A successor to the special edition V8 Vantage N400 of 2007, the Vantage N420 is based upon the standard 4.7-liter, 420bhp, 180mph V8 Vantage. It is available as a Coupe or Roadster, and with a six-speed manual or optional Sportshift automated manual transmission.

The Vantage N420 draws inspiration from the company’s experiences at the Nürburgring 24-hour race. Is the Aston Martin DBS as Good as It Looks?

The connection between James Bond and Aston Martin over the years has continued to be successful for both brands. Just take a look at the cars:

• The DB5 in “Goldfinger”, “Quantum of Solace” and “Golden Eye” (which recently sold for over $4 million)
• The DBS in “On Her Majesty's Secret Service”
• The Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante in “The Living Daylights”
• The V12 Vanquish in “Die Another Day”
• The DBS in “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace

When the Aston Martin DBS burst on the scene in the movie “Casino Royale”, the world was enthralled with this newest beauty. The press, enthusiasts and even film buffs couldn’t get enough of the British super car.

But Aston only makes a small number of these fine automobiles. That exclusivity led some to dull their enthusiasm, thinking the car was as too unobtainable. A few even questioned whether the car was as good in person as it was on the big screen, snickering that its reputation was built on a fictional character.

A recent weekend in a 2010 DBS presented an opportunity to see how much substance was behind all that style. The old questions rolled through my mind. Was the car as exciting today as it was when it exploded on the international scene? Would the DBS be “all hat and no cattle”?

John Eagle European Aston Martin of Austin provided a stunning DBS special edition convertible for a media test drive weekend. The “Carbon Black” paint shimmered in the Hill Country’s October sunlight, giving the car a “Hollywood” shine. Instantly smitten, it was hard to keep my cool while completing the requisite paperwork. The Aston was dazzling.

As a primer, Aston Martin of Austin’s dealer principal, Sonny Morgan, provided a short refresher on the car. The V12 powered DBS convertible has 510 horsepower, an optional 6 speed automatic transmission and is available with either four seats or a rear luggage shelf. Significant portions of the car are made from carbon fiber to make the car lighter and more nimble. The active suspension was derived from Aston’s DBR9 racing program.

The car’s interior is as stunning as its body. Leather, carbon fiber and real metal; no faux pieces like many Mercedes and Jaguars here! Starting the engine results in a nice V12 snarl, which is even better when the top smoothly drops down. The wonderful first impressions of the car sent chills down my spine. This Aston was indeed hot with a capital “H”.

Over the course of the weekend, we drove the muscular Aston in the Hill Country, down Sixth street, to local shops and restaurants. Every lane was pure joy, every stoplight an acoustic delight. Whether carving up apex’s on the way to a bed & breakfast outside town or stopping at an art gallery to peruse their offerings, every moment was a delight.

It was difficult saying goodbye at the end of the weekend to the DBS. Was this “celluloid star” as good as it looked on the big screen? Oh yes. The relationship with Aston’s superb supercar was as satisfying – no, more satisfying - than I could have imagined. This is a car that would stand head and shoulders above the rest without the James Bond films.

Aston still only makes a few DBS convertibles and coupes each year, so they are still as exclusive and rare as ever. The Aston Martin DBS is a car with as much substance as style. It’s expensive, but worth every dollar.

Much has been written about the new (to the USA) Aston Martin V12 Vantage (http://www.astonmartinofaustin.com/web/1582/vantage12). The car’s track acumen and street appeal have resulted in accolades being heaped upon its bespoked hood. But many have missed one of the most attractive aspects of this 12-cylinder wonder car—it’s potential for long-term collectability.

Though there are no guarantees that a car will hold an increase in value, serious pundits believe the 2010 V12 Vantage holds tremendous potential. One of the reasons is that comparison to the 1962 DB4 Zagato are too numerous to overlook.

Consider that the 1960 DB4 Zagato was created to compete with the mighty Ferraris of the period. Aston turned up the wick on their sporting coupe, giving it a more voluptuous look, better power to weight ratio, superb brakes and sharper handling. Only a few of these rare, exclusive cars were built and even fewer raced. Today, those cars command multi-million dollar price tags and are considered among the most coveted Astons in the world.

The V12 Vantage has a similar pedigree. By engineering the DBS drive train into the Vantage chassis, the car has a wonderful power to weight ratio. The carbon ceramic brakes are fantastic, the sport suspension superb and the body lightened and modified to maximize both aerodynamics and sex appeal. The factory has entered a couple of V12 Vantages in various events successfully such as at the Nürburgring. They have even offered to build spec race cars available to private teams. And like the Series 1 DB4 Zagato, very, very few will be built.

Will the 510 HP V12 Vantage reach stratosphere values someday? No one knows. But with its similarity to the fabled Zagato and small production run, it has the potential to do so over the long term. Few other purchases today offer such upside, nor sound and look so good.

Aston Martin has unveiled a new motorsport-inspired special edition: the V8 Vantage N420 which brings a new dimension of sporting prowess and dynamic ability to the V8 Vantage range. The N420 will make its US debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August 2010. The special order car will be available through John Eagle European's Aston Martin of Austin, along with the new Rapide, DB9, DBS, V12 Vantage and V8 Vantage.

Successor to the special edition V8 Vantage N400 of 2007, the Vantage N420 is based upon the standard 4.7-liter, 420bhp, 180mph V8 Vantage and is available as a Coupe or Roadster, and with a six-speed manual or optional Sportshift automated manual transmission.

"The Vantage N420 draws inspiration from Aston Martin's experiences at the Nürburgring 24-hour race," said Sonny Morgan, dealer principal of Aston Martin of Austin. "In the 2006 running of the annual Nürburgring endurance classic in a field of mostly motorsport homologated cars, Aston Martin entered a near-standard, road-registered V8 Vantage. Driven by a team of employees, including Aston CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez, the V8 Vantage finished 4th in class and 24th overall from a field of more than 200 specialized racing cars."

Since then Aston Martin has returned every year to compete in this grueling endurance race, scoring a string of class victories and podiums with road-registered V8 and V12 Vantages and most recently the new four-door Rapide. Not only has this racing success spawned a burgeoning V8 Vantage GT4 customer program run by Aston Martin Racing, but lessons learned in racing at the Nürburgring has led to aerodynamic and other performance developments being fed back into Aston Martin’s road cars.

Carroll Shelby Reflects on Aston Martin

Carroll Shelby has a deep bond with Aston Martin thanks to his racing victories for the factory team in the 1950’s. Less well know is his strong connection to fellow Texan and Aston dealer, Sonny Morgan.

Managing principal at John Eagle European, Sonny has known Carroll for many years. They have both attended various events and shows across the Lone Star State.

Sonny also owns a 1966 Shelby Mustang signed by Carroll. The automotive legend signed the pony car after Morgan gave him a demonstration drive in a V8 Vantage. He then turned the wheel over to the English born Cleo Shelby at Carroll’s request. She thoroughly enjoyed driving the fantastic Aston Martin.

During the Sebring race weekend, Carroll was interviewed by Aston Martin about his role in the company’s motorsport history. As many know, the American automotive legend was part of the 1959 Le Mans-winning line-up, as well as at Sebring and also a Formula 1 try for the factory team.

According to Aston Martin Racing, Carroll said:

“It’s always made me very proud to be associated with Aston Martin,” says Carroll Shelby, who is now enjoying retirement. “What we achieved back then was remarkable; particularly as we didn’t have huge resources to spend. I think the Le Mans win in particular really put the company on the map in America.”

Shelby also drove an Aston Martin DBR1 in the 1959 12 Hours of Sebring, with his Le Mans-winning partner Roy Salvadori but sadly the duo were not quite able to repeat their French success. In total, Shelby contested Sebring four times for Aston Martin between 1954 and 1959, making him the company’s most enduring American hero.

Aston Martin first raced at Sebring in 1950 with the DB2, and the company has been represented at the classic American endurance race 11 times in total. The team came tantalisingly close to winning in 1953, when the DB3 of Reg Parnell and George Abecassis was classified second – but the real champagne moment came many years later in 2005.

One of the high points of Aston Martin Racing’s history in America was the 12 Hours of Sebring five years ago: the race debut for the new DBR9, which resulted in GT1 class victory for David Brabham, Stephane Ortelli and Darren Turner, coupled with a tremendous fourth overall.

In 1954 and 1956 Shelby drove the DB3S, before switching to the famous DBR1 for the 1958 and 1959 races. Now aged 87, he still remembers exactly what it was like…

“Sebring is where my whole story with Aston Martin, which would take us all the way to winning Le Mans and the World Championship in 1959, originally started. Back in 1954 I was racing an Allard at a 1000-kilometre race in Argentina, and there I met John Wyer; who was Aston Martin’s team manager at the time. We got talking and agreed that I would drive for Aston Martin at Sebring in the same year.

From then on I stayed loyal to Aston Martin, as it was such a special team. I had offers from many other teams, like Ferrari, but I always chose to stay at Aston Martin because I had a very good and straightforward relationship with everyone there, such as John Wyer, Tony Brooks and Roy Salvadori. In most other teams there was a lot of politics, but Aston Martin was always very fair.

The funny thing was that we never had much luck at Sebring. We were first in class and fourth overall in 1956 in a DB3S that I shared with Salvadori and that was about as good as it got. One year, I remember we were running in third or fourth and when I went to downshift, the entire gear lever came off in my hand! I got the car stopped somehow, but it wasn’t a pretty moment.

Even though we didn’t get the results that we hoped for, Sebring is the race that really launched my international career with Aston Martin and I’ll always be thankful for that.

Back then of course the racing at Sebring was completely different: it was all about saving the car for a big push in the last hour. You had to use your judgment constantly and drive to pre-determined lap times in order to be sure of making it through the race. Now the cars are so strong that they can race all the way to the end, but back in my day there weren’t enough brakes on the car for half an hour if you drove flat-out, never mind 12 hours.

While the cars have changed beyond recognition, the Sebring circuit is basically the same. I remember it as a rough and bumpy old airfield, which is still how it is now.
During the race we used to do stints of around two and a half hours, with around 125-130 degrees Fahrenheit in the cockpit, and we’d actually drill a hole in the seat to let the sweat out. You could lose around 15 pounds in sweat. These days, I believe that the drivers have air conditioning and just need to push a button to change gear!

I’d like to wish them all the very best of luck this weekend, and I’m so proud to see Aston Martin racing in America again. I’m sure that they will love the experience.”

Aston Martin V12 Vantage Awarded ‘Supercar of the Year’ by Wheels Magazine

The Aston Martin V12 Vantage has continued to receive global recognition after being named the Wheels Magazine ‘Supercar of the Year’. The V12 Vantage beat off stiff opposition from the Jaguar XKR, Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo Mercedes SLR and Porsche 911 Turbo to land the accolade.

The criteria of entry for the awards, voted for by the Wheels editorial team, meant each car had to have been on sale in 2009, and test driven over the course of the last year.

Wheels writer Amit Benjamin reviewed the V12 Vantage for Wheels: “The Aston Martin V12 Vantage is a traditional sports car in every sense, with a wonderful six liter engine up front, delivering enormous reserves of power to only the rear wheels. Those crazy guys at Fifth Gear decided to use an Aston Martin DBS Volante to hop from club to club in the congested downtown streets of London. Was it fun? Oh yes. How could it not be in an Aston?

The liked it much better than a Ferrari for driving in traffic. Our favorite line from the video: "This thing makes you feel like a king and it looks just gorgeous." They would have even higher praise for the car cruising down Sixth Street in Austin or hitting the Hill Country byways.
